The truth is, any Tree and Lawn Maintenance Company can put together a plan to take care of your trees. It will be one that they look up online that is similar to hundreds of others, and that won’t ruin your trees. And, for the most part, it will be pretty good.
But it won’t be great. And it won’t provide everything that your trees and shrubs need to grow to their full potential, that’s for sure.
To put together a plan for your trees and shrubs that not only nourishes them but takes into account every need for each individual plant, you want to go with a company that has a Certified Arborist.
A Certified Arborist is a professional arborist with a minimum of 3 years’ experience working in the tree care industry. He or she must have passed a thorough examination that covers all areas of arboriculture. The certification is provided by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).
The Certified Arborist Examination is not some easy test at the end of a throw-away class to get a meaningless certificate. In fact, the Certified Arborist examination covers everything from tree biology and identification to tree/soil/water relations to nutrition, planting, and establishment to problem diagnosis and management (and much, much more). Certification ensures that your arborist knows everything under the canopy (if you’ll excuse my pun) of tree and shrub knowledge.
After they’ve completed the examination and received their certificate, arborists must complete 30 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) within 3 years to re-certify. They earn these by attending seminars, taking classes, or completing studies in ISA-published magazines and books.
As I’ve said, going with a lawn care company’s Tree & Shrub Program that was not put together by a Certified Arborist will still get you pretty good results. For the most part, your trees and shrubs will get more nutrition than they were getting before, and if there’s a problem with disease they will most likely eventually figure out the solution.
But a program run by a Certified Arborist is not only put together to maximize efficiency when delivering nutrition and protection to trees and shrubs, but it’s also designed to maximize efficiency for YOUR trees and shrubs. A Certified Arborist will identify and develop the plan around the exact needs of your unique plants. And if there’s a problem with disease, it’s taken care of immediately. No guesswork. No googling.
Perhaps the best part of hiring a company with a Certified Arborist is the education that you, the customer, are given. A good Arborist will walk you through exactly what the plan is for your trees and shrubs – what they need when they need it, and why. They’ll answer any questions you may have, and make sure you both are on the same page when it comes to treating your lawn.
That’s why we have a Certified Arborist on staff, ready to design a Tree & Shrub Program around your lawn’s needs, and answer any questions you may have. We care about this more than anyone because we know that the right knowledge is the key to maintaining a lawn that not only survives but thrives.
